Area codes
New area codes in the US and Canada
Since January 1, 2025, 12 new area codes have gone into service in the US and Canada, the latest being 465 (New York) on June 18, 2026. NANPA has 6 more assigned: 4 with a scheduled date, starting with 273 (Quebec) on February 27, 2027, and 2 without one yet.
Updated October 10, 2026, from the NANPA NPA database file of that date. NANPA announces new codes in its planning letters before they go into service.
Area codes in service since January 1, 2025
Newest first. Each one is an overlay: it shares its area with the codes listed.

NANPA also opened 3 non-geographic codes in this period (538, 542 and 543), which it lists for "Non-Geographic Services" rather than for a state or province.
Planned area codes
Assigned by NANPA but not in service yet, soonest first. A code without a date is assigned, but NANPA has not scheduled it.
| Code | State / province | Planned in-service date | Will share its area with |
|---|---|---|---|
| 273 | Quebec | February 27, 2027 | 367, 418, 581 |
| 565 | Georgia | December 6, 2027 | 912 |
| 851 | Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island | May 27, 2028 | 782, 902 |
| 568 | Alberta | June 10, 2028 | 368, 403, 587, 780, 825 |
| 451 | North Carolina | Date not set | 828 |
| 761 | Kentucky | Date not set | 502 |
| 822 | Toll-free (NANP-wide) | Date not set | Not tied to an area (toll-free) |
Why hard-coded area code lists break
A signup form, CRM rule or lead filter that checks numbers against a fixed list of area codes starts rejecting real numbers the day a new code goes live. A list copied before June 18, 2026 doesn't have 465, so a valid New York number from it fails the check. The next planned code will do the same to a list copied today.
The warning is there: each of the 12 codes above was assigned by NANPA at least 15 months before it went into service. Someone still has to pick up the change.
- Validate against current data. Use the CSV or JSON from the area code list and refresh your copy when NANPA's file changes. The JSON lists planned codes with their dates, so you can add a code before it goes live.
- Or validate the number itself. A CheckThatPhone lookup runs a live carrier dip on the full number rather than matching its area code against a list. See the API docs.

New area codes: common questions
What is the newest area code?
465, an overlay for New York (it shares its area with 347, 718, 917 and 929), went into service on June 18, 2026. It is the most recent geographic area code in NANPA's file dated October 10, 2026.
What new area codes are coming in 2027?
NANPA has scheduled 273 (Quebec, February 27, 2027) and 565 (Georgia, December 6, 2027). Later dates are listed in the planned table on this page.
Will my phone number change when a new area code is added?
Not with an overlay, which is how every code on this page is being added: existing numbers keep their area code, and new numbers can be assigned from the new one. Because two or more codes then serve the same area, local calls need all 10 digits (in the US, FCC rules require it for overlays: 47 CFR 52.19(c)(3)(ii)).
How do I keep an area code list up to date?
Refresh it from current data: the CSV and JSON on the area code list are built from NANPA's NPA database, and the JSON includes planned codes with their dates. Or avoid a fixed list and validate each number with a lookup (docs).
