Phone validation for SMS marketing

Check each number when it opts in and re-scrub the list before campaigns: whether it can take a text, whether a carrier deactivated it in the last 45 days, whether it belongs to a known TCPA litigator, and its local time for quiet hours.

Where it fits in your text program

  1. Step 1

    At opt-in

One API call from checkout or the signup popup, before the confirmation text goes out. Add landlineSmsLookup to catch landlines that can take texts.

  2. Step 2

    Re-scrub the list monthly

Deactivation entries expire after 45 days, so re-check the active list at least monthly. CSV upload takes up to 1,000,000 rows.

  3. Step 3

    Litigator check before each campaign

    SendSuppressRemove

Run the send list with the litigator scrub (+1 credit per number) before it goes to your SMS platform.

What a list this size costs

Monthly cost, with the TCPA litigator scrub (+1 credit per number):

  • 100,000-subscriber list + 20,000 new opt-ins, 100,000 subscribers/mo: $222/mo on the 100K plan, billed monthly
Your monthly cost $222/mo on the 100K plan, billed monthly 100,000 subscribers × 2 credits + 20,000 new opt-ins × 1 credit + 2,000 landline SMS checks × 1 credit = 222,000 credits. 100K plan: $100 + 122,000 × $0.001 = $222 Assumes 10% of new opt-ins are landlines (2,000 landline SMS checks). Measure yours.

State DNC and complainer checks never add credits. The landline SMS check adds 1 credit per landline; mobiles are not charged.

What the lookup covers, and what's still on you

The lookup gives you

  • Whether each number can take a text, from a live carrier dip after porting
  • Text-capable landlines, with the landline SMS check (+1 credit per landline)
  • Carrier deactivations in the last 45 days
  • Known TCPA litigators (+1 credit)
  • State do-not-call matches in 38 states plus DC, and complainers (free)
  • The time zone of the IP you pass, or of the area code, for quiet hours

Still your job

  • Prior express written consent for autodialed marketing messages: a signed written agreement that names the number · 47 CFR 64.1200(a)(2), 64.1200(f)(9)
  • Opt-outs sent any reasonable way, including replies like "stop", "quit", "cancel" or "unsubscribe", honored within 10 business days · 47 CFR 64.1200(a)(10)
  • Consent records: the CTIA guidelines list the timestamp, the opt-in medium, the campaign and the IP address used. They also say not to text opt-in lists that were rented, sold or shared. · CTIA 5.1.2, 5.1.4
  • 10DLC brand and campaign registration with The Campaign Registry, through your messaging provider
  • Florida: stop text solicitations within 15 days of a STOP reply. A recipient can sue for $500 per violation, up to three times that if willful or knowing · Fla. Stat. 501.059(10)

Coverage and limits

  • State DNC: covers 38 states plus DC, refreshed weekly. Numbers in CO, FL, IN, LA, MA, MS, MO, OK, PA, TN, TX and WY aren't checked, and dncStateChecked is left out for them, so "not checked" never reads as clear.
  • No National Do Not Call Registry check. Registry access for sellers comes from the FTC at telemarketing.donotcall.gov.
  • No subscriber names or owner details.
  • deactivationDate: data refreshed daily, with a 1 to 7 day lag, and entries expire after 45 days. It is not a reassigned-number check.
  • Canadian numbers are validated and carrier-dipped like US numbers, but the state DNC check is US-only and Canada's National DNCL isn't checked.

Questions text programs ask

Does validation register or approve our 10DLC campaign?

No. 10DLC brands and campaigns are registered with The Campaign Registry, and brands can't register directly: your messaging provider handles it. The lookup doesn't register, vet or approve anything.

Can we text a landline?

Some of them. About 7% of the landlines we check are SMS-capable. Add landlineSmsLookup to find them: 1 extra credit per landline, and mobiles aren't charged. A landline that can take a text comes back with smsEligible: "true".

Does it catch recycled numbers?

Partly. deactivationDate flags a number a carrier deactivated in the last 45 days, from data refreshed daily with a 1 to 7 day lag. Once a number is reactivated the date clears, whether it went back to the same subscriber or a new one, so it isn't reassigned-number detection. The FCC's Reassigned Numbers Database is built for that.

Does a DNC match stop the send?

No. The state DNC and complainer checks are informational: a match never changes action. Decide in your own logic, based on your consent records. Absent DNC fields mean the check didn't run, not that the number is clear.

What does action "unsubscribe" mean?

Don't text that number. reason says why, and it is one of four strings: "Associated with TCPA Litigator DO NOT CONTACT", "Not a valid mobile number", "Blacklisted Subscriber", or "Number deactivated by carrier id <N> on <date>".

Do you manage STOP replies?

No. Replies go to your messaging platform, not to us. Opt-outs can come by any reasonable method and must be honored within 10 business days (47 CFR 64.1200(a)(10)). blackList is our internal blacklist, not your opt-out list.
